Our Calendar

October 30, 2010, Franklin, TN - Our web calendar has taken a trip through Mr. Peabody's Way-Back Machine, but it's available for viewing once again. Thank you, Sherman. Not as flashy, but useful, the calendar is back to the stone knives and bear skins of plain HTML. We apologize for the downgrade. So did our hosting provider...harrumph! At least we no longer have to do mental gymnastics to get the meeting times correct with this method (the old system's time zone calculations never quite worked out.) It's also not as convenient or complete. We have to wait for our webmaster to manually update the calendar page and we've lost many other local event entries with the loss of automation. We appreciate your patience.

Sally Lee Published in TWA's Maypop

October 29, 2010, Franklin, TN - CWW member Sally Lee has delivered a curious short story just in time for the November elections, Washington Erased. Who is this little girl that can change things the adults in her life don't like? For other recent stories by Tennessee writers, visit the Tennessee Writers Alliance website and read Maypop.

Scheduled to Attend Dickens of a Christmas

Coming in December, Franklin, TN - Join CWW Dec 11-12 at Dickens of a Christmas, Franklin's Main Street celebration of the season. CWW will again have a booth at the festival. Participation is open to Williamson County authors with books to sell. For details, contact CWW.

2010 Southern Festival of Books

September 8-10, 2010, Nashville, TN - The annual Southern Festival of books has come and gone, but CWW was there. This year, the Council welcomed non-member authors. We'll be doing that again. In addition to the usual CWW suspects, Leah Charter presented her book Tennessee Flood 2010 with proceeds benefitting flood victims through the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee. Spring Hill author Lenny Ramirez was also with us to showcase his graphic novel, Haven. Both sold well. Tennessee Tidbits author Terri Frank also joined us in the booth. The heat was, well, excessive. Our booth was in the full sun that shouldn't have been there and minus the crowds that should have. By all appearances and comment from other attendees, attendance was down. Next year will be better.

Allen Takes First!

Friday, June 11, 2010, Franklin, TN - Our own Christopher Allen's short story Red Toy Soldier won First Prize in The Smoking Poet’s Third Annual Short Story Contest. His touching portrayal of misplaced love is well worth the read and the prize. Congratulations, Chris.

Flood of Epic Proportion

Saturday, May 8, 2010, Franklin, TN - Hadn't heard about it? You're not alone. We're still getting calls a week after by friends and family who only heard it on the news a week late. See Why the Media Ignored the Nashville Flood and We Are Nashville for some interesting insight.

It started as just a rainy day. Heavy rains made attending just about anything in Middle Tennessee a challenge. Even the FRC luncheon was affected, but spirits were high. Over the next two days, Franklin, TN and surrounding communities in numerous counties experienced a regional flood surpassing all accounts in recorded history for this area. CWW members and families are affected, but it hasn't stopped them from reaching out to help one another. We will shine again. The volunteer spirit is alive and well. It has blossomed in the hearts of new citizens who aren't native to Tennessee. This is a special place!

Susie Dunham Recognized

Tuesday, May 4, 2010, Franklin, TN - CWW member Susie Dunham and her husband Terry were recognized for their endless community service assisting flood victims in and around Williamson County, TN. Susie and Terry are just two examples of the treasures to be found in our fair county and CWW. Susie and Terry have been recognized in local papers and on member Kathy Rhodes' blog, First Draft.

CWW Honored by Williamson County Family Resource Center

Saturday, May 1, 2010, Franklin, TN - The 2010 Family Resource Center (FRC) Writing Contest attracts area students from Kindergarten through twelfth grade. The Young Author's Luncheon held May 1 celebrated this year's winning compositions. CWW has been a sponsor of past contests and members have regularly participated as contest judges. This year, CWW was surprised as Director Priscilla Bright presented the Council with an award "In honor of your outstanding sponsorship to the Family Resource Center's annual writing contest." President Dave Stewart humbly accepted. CWW is proud to be associated with the FRC and to participate in the annual contest encouraging youth to write. Encourage your child to participate in 2011!

CWW at Main Street Festival

Saturday, Apr. 24, 2010, Franklin, TN - It was a dark and stormy day. CWW participated in the 2010 Main Street Festival only to be chased off by heavy storms on Saturday and return on Sunday afternoon. Sunday was sunny with wind that threatened to blow us down, but it couldn't dampen the spirits of festival attendees. It was a fabulous crowd with people walking for nearly a mile to get in due to crowded parking. Will we be there next year? Be there and find out!

It Was a Dickens of a Christmas!

Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 12-13, Franklin, TN - CWW's debut appearance at Dickens of a Christmas was well recieved. Around fifteen members turned out, many dressed in period costume, for the blustery weekend that was quite well attended. Five individual authors sold their books in addition to two anthologies:Gathering and Muscadine Lines. We're looking forward to next year!

GOTCHA COVERED Booksigning was well covered!

Saturday, Oct. 24, Franklin, TN - Miss Daisy's Kitchen in Franklin, TN witnessed a huge turnout for Ginger Manley's book, Gotcha Covered: A Legacy of Service and Protection. Miss Daisy's was packed for two hours. Special guest and friend Colin Linden sang his new song "Gotcha Covered." That song inspired the book's title. The anthology is edited and contributed to by Ginger Manley. Member Louise Colln is also a contributing author. Written by nurses you'd think it would have a perspective limited to, well, nursing. Not so. The book is about purpose and traditions - some forever lost - others more recently found or rediscovered. We'll have photographs posted soon.
Wonder who was behind the aprons? See a video interview by the Johnson City Press, a Nov. 1 headliner!

PHOTOS!

Sunday, Sep. 20, Franklin, TN - Photos are now being posted to the scrapbook page! See pics from The Unbridled Pen and two booksignings held this summer. More to follow. We're on a roll!

UNBRIDLED PEN NOW BRIDLED

Saturday, Sep. 12, Franklin, TN - It came. We saw. We conquered. The Unbridled Pen stampeded into town early Friday evening. The reception at Landmark Books was delightful (thank you Joel and Carol!). Dinner at Monell's was as unbridled as the pen (and may have put some of us to sleep even the next day...oops!). The workshop on Saturday was great! We had thirty-six in attendance and several new faces. Michael Martone's wild pen flowed with the ink of unconventional wisdom of what to do with stuff that happens. Peggy Godfrey rode in roughshod from Colorado and recited the wild pen into submission while sharing her secrets for digging deep and understanding your inner poet. Everyone moseyed on home a little richer for being there. Pictures coming soon.(..er, or later.)

Launch Party a Success!

Saturday, August 15, Franklin, TN - We did it! Gathering launched with an amazing crowd of 250 fans. Twenty-four authors were present for the book signing and merriment, including one who flew back from Germany just to be present! Were you there? If not, you were missed! Pictures coming soon.(..er, or later.)

Creative Non-Fiction a Hit in Tennessee!

The 2008 Fall Workshop with Lee Gutkind was a resounding success! Saturday, September 13, 2008 saw the largest crowd ever to attend a CWW event as we hosted Lee Gutkind and "The 5 R's of Creative Non-Fiction". The all-day workshop left Lee smiling along with more than 100 in attendance. Writers from five states participated in the workshop. Lee's open style and in-depth presentation of the genre made the day pass all too quickly. A pre-event reception for attendees was graciously hosted by Landmark Booksellers of Franklin, TN.

Read-Around Tennessee in Franklin - April 19, 2008

Thanks to everyone who came to enjoy the annual Read-Around Tennessee. The event, hosted by Tennessee Writers Alliance in conjuction with CWW, provided an open microphone for local writers to present their work. We had twenty-one readers and ten individuals who just came to listen to the great variety of poetry and prose.

Our thanks also to the Williamson County Public Library in Franklin, which provided a wonderful setting for sharing the creative muse, and to Channel 3, which filmed the event and provided a DVD for readers and members to borrow.

If you would like to join us next year, sign up for our mailing list (please specify "Mailing List" in subject line) and we will notify you personally by email next April.

The 2007 Fall Seminar was a success!

The day was a mix of pretty quilts and NASCAR, set up for NYT best-selling Appalachian author Sharyn McCrumb. The room was a mix of energy and excitement and attentiveness to the speaker, the crowd soaking in every word. The Food/Decorations committee did a splendid job. Publicity got the word out, and the crowd came...93 people, from West Tennessee, East Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri, West Virginia, and right here in the metropolitan area. The day went fast, and when all was said and done, it seems that everybody was pleased. See what attendees had to say:

"I really enjoyed the seminar. Sharyn McCrumb delivered more helpful information in a short period of time than several presenters have delivered over a 2-day period at other conferences. Your food spread was great, the facility (library) was pleasant and easy to use.
Thanks loads,

Pat Crocker of Memphis

"I want to thank you and all the members of the Council for the Written Word for welcoming me to your fall seminar with Sharyn McCrumb. She's one of the authors I most respect, and I learned a great deal from her Saturday. Your program is first class."
